Description

The 23Zero Armadillo Horizon 3 is a rugged, feature-rich aluminum hardshell roof tent built for serious overland exploration. With a new high-opening design, 2″ self-inflating mattress, and unmatched ventilation, this rooftop tent hardshell blends durability, comfort, and convenience.

The 23Zero Armadillo Horizon 3 sets a new benchmark in rooftop tents hardshell innovation. With inspiration pulled from the Kabari PRO, Armadillo X, and Armadillo A, the Horizon 3 merges sleek, aerodynamic design with the most popular features that matter most to overlanders and avid campers. It’s a 14 GA fully welded aluminum shell with rounded corners that looks sharp and offers trail-tested toughness and weather protection year-round.

This left-side-opening tent features a high-opening gas-strut-assisted hinge for quick, easy setups and takedowns. The new design eliminates the need for front rainfly poles—replaced with an integrated hoop for simple rain coverage. Inside, enjoy 360° views through oversized windows (two 45” x 23” side windows, a 39” x 30” door, and a 46” x 4” rear window), plus a 36” x 22” skylight for stargazing.

Built for superior sleep, the Armadillo Horizon 3 includes a plush Self-inflating mattress with dual fill ports, allowing more interior space for bedding. ECO13B fabric with Light Suppression Technology (LST) creates a cool, dark retreat, even on bright summer mornings. The tent also includes a built-in USB LED light bar (white, amber, and blended modes), bug mesh for all openings, and weather canopies for protection and airflow.

Storage is another strong point of Horizon 3. From the overhead ten-pocket gear loft and bedside storage to the hanging organizer and boot bag, there’s a place for everything. A dual T-slot rail system on the roof supports 50 lbs of gear like solar panels or recovery gear, while the power module—featuring 12V, USB-A, and USB-C ports—connects via pre-wired SP-50 Anderson plug.

The Armadillo Horizon 3 is designed for vehicles of all sizes—from crossovers to full-size rigs—and comes ready with a preinstalled ladder, window poles, gear bags, snow pole, and mounting kit. It’s the total package for anyone who overlands and camps hard but wants to sleep like a king.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Rooftop Tent

Rooftop tents (RTTs) are a versatile and comfortable way to camp, but they do require some planning before purchase and installation. The considerations below apply to most rooftop tents, regardless of brand or model.

Vehicle compatibility
Not all vehicles are suitable for rooftop tent use. You should confirm that your vehicle’s dynamic and static roof load ratings are sufficient for the tent, occupants, and any additional gear. Always refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

Roof racks and mounting
A compatible roof rack or crossbar system is required to mount a rooftop tent. Racks must be properly rated for rooftop tent use and securely installed. Some tents are heavier or larger than others, which may influence rack selection.

Tent weight and size
Rooftop tents vary in weight, footprint, and folded height. Consider:

  • overall vehicle height once installed

  • garage or parking clearance

  • ease of opening and closing the tent

Heavier tents may require assistance for installation or removal.

Installation considerations
Most rooftop tents are designed to be installed by the customer using basic tools, but installation may require:

  • lifting the tent onto the vehicle

  • aligning mounting hardware

  • ensuring even weight distribution

Some customers choose to have installation performed by a professional or with the help of a second person.

Access and daily use
Think about how often you’ll open and close the tent and how you’ll access it when deployed. Ladder placement, door orientation, and vehicle height can all affect ease of use.

Driving and handling
Adding a rooftop tent changes your vehicle’s weight distribution and center of gravity. You may notice differences in:

  • handling

  • braking

  • fuel efficiency

These effects vary by vehicle, tent size, and driving conditions.
